African Parks’ work in Malawi showcases one of Africa’s greatest conservation turnarounds. Majete Wildlife Reserve — their first project — has transformed from a depleted landscape into a thriving Big 5 sanctuary. In 2016, African Parks extended this success by moving 500 elephants and other herbivores to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, the largest elephant translocation in history and a major step in protecting the species from poaching and habitat loss.

Mkulumadzi Lodge in Majete sits at the confluence of two rivers, surrounded by restored wilderness now home to elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, giraffe and over 300 bird species, including Pel’s fishing owl and four vulture species.

Liwonde National Park, home to Kuthengo Camp, offers game drives and boat safaris along the Shire River. Its fertile plains support elephants, hippos, crocodiles, cheetah, wild dogs, black rhino and around 400 bird species such as palm‑nut vultures, ospreys and Lilian’s lovebirds.

Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, where Tongole Wilderness Lodge is located, has seen wildlife steadily return since African Parks took over in 2015. Visitors can explore its rivers, waterfalls and Miombo woodlands on foot or by canoe. More than 280 bird species occur here, including giant kingfishers, black storks and fish eagles
