We recently had the pleasure of exploring South Africa’s beautiful Eastern Cape once again, and it reminded us why this region remains one of the country’s most underrated gems. From breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality to exceptional wildlife experiences, the Eastern Cape truly offers something very special for travellers looking for an authentic and diverse safari experience.
One of the greatest advantages of the Eastern Cape is that it is a malaria-free safari destination, making it ideal for families with young children, honeymoon couples, multigenerational travellers, and anyone who prefers to travel without taking anti-malaria medication. Combined with easy access from Cape Town and the Garden Route, it creates the perfect extension to any South African itinerary.
What makes the Eastern Cape so unique is its incredible diversity of scenery. Within a relatively short distance, travellers can experience dramatic coastlines, rolling hills, lush valleys, open plains, and magnificent wildlife reserves teeming with animals. The region offers excellent opportunities to see the Big Five, along with cheetah, giraffe, zebra, antelope, hyena, and an abundance of birdlife.
During our recent visit, we were once again impressed by the quality and character of the safari lodges in the region. The Eastern Cape is home to a wonderful collection of boutique safari lodges and private game reserves, many of which combine luxury and comfort with a strong commitment to conservation and community upliftment. What we particularly love is that many of these lodges feel intimate and personal rather than overly commercial, allowing guests to truly connect with nature and enjoy warm South African hospitality.
Game drives in the Eastern Cape are both exciting and relaxed, often with fewer vehicles compared to some of the more heavily visited safari regions. This creates a more exclusive and immersive experience where guests can spend quality time observing wildlife in beautiful natural surroundings.
Beyond safari, the Eastern Cape also offers rich history and culture, beautiful beaches, scenic road trips, excellent local cuisine, and opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, walking trails, horse riding, and marine experiences. It is a destination that appeals equally to first-time visitors to Africa as well as seasoned travellers looking for something a little different.
For travellers wanting to combine Cape Town, the Winelands, and safari into one seamless journey, the Eastern Cape is an outstanding choice and one we highly recommend.
